How to pronounce aya

product community-consensus

ah yah /ˈɑːjə/ mp3
or: eye uh /ˈaɪə/

aya is most commonly pronounced "ah yah" (/ˈɑːjə/). This is the widely-used reading among engineers, though edge cases exist.

Cohere Labs' open-science multilingual LLM family (Aya 101 / Aya 23 / Aya Expanse / Aya Vision / Tiny Aya), up to 101 languages, Apache-2.0. Named after the Twi (Ghana) word 'aya' = 'fern', an Adinkra symbol of endurance and resourcefulness (per Cohere's announcements). Standard reading is AH-yah (/ˈɑːjə/), matching the Twi/Akan and common given-name pronunciation. STRESS first syllable: AH-yah. Some English speakers anglicize it to EYE-uh, but the fern/Twi origin points to AH-yah.

Pronouncing project and product names correctly avoids the small but persistent friction of being gently corrected during standups, conference Q&As, and team calls. Hearing the word a few times locks in the right reading better than reading IPA ever will. Pronounce is a community-maintained dictionary — every entry tagged with a confidence level and (where possible) a citable source.

Hear it from the command line

$ say-it aya # primary × 3 + audible "or: …" for each alternate
$ say-it --alt aya # focus on the first alternate
$ say-it --all aya # primary AND every alternate, each repeated
$ say-it --solo aya # primary only, no "or: …" tail
$ say-it --why aya # print the dict entry with source URL
